Broken People Save the Broken - A2
[This song was inspired by the 2021 movie The Guilty, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a 911 Operator. Near the end of the film, a simple but powerful line is spoken: “Broken people save broken people.” That idea stuck with me. I started thinking about how sometimes the people who have been through the darkest places are the ones who can recognize pain in others—and sometimes, their own brokenness is exactly what allows them to help someone else.]
Verse 1
He answers calls from people breaking
Strangers screaming through the wire
Every voice becomes a photograph
Every photograph catches fire
He tells them, “Stay with me, I’m listening”
While something cracks behind his eyes
He sends them toward the light they’re seeking
Then drives home underneath the lies
His headset comes off at midnight
But the voices of the dead never die
Somebody’s mother
Somebody’s daughter
Somebody’s son he couldn’t save
Pre-Chorus
And someone said, “Don’t be ashamed
Of the cracks you can’t repair
Sometimes the people who’ve been shattered
Are the first ones who know where to look for the tears”
Chorus
Broken people save broken people
The wounded recognize the wounded in the dark
We know the language of the bleeding
We know the difference between silence and a cry for help
Broken people save broken people
Not because we’re whole, but because we’ve been there
Sometimes the hand that pulls you from the darkness
Is still shaking from the darkness it escaped
Verse 2
The addict hears the little hesitation
When another addict says, “I’m fine”
He knows the lie because he lived it
One thousand denies plus one more time
The veteran sees a stranger sleeping
With one eye open on the street
He doesn’t ask him what he’s running from
He just sits down beside the feet
No sermon
No solution
No promise everything will change
Just two ghosts sharing the darkness
Until the darkness loses its name
Pre-Chorus
Because some things can’t be explained
To someone who’s never felt the weight
You don’t need to tell the drowning man
What water feels like when you’ve almost drowned yourself
Verse 3
The woman walks into the shelter
And says, “He doesn’t usually get that mad”
She says, “He’s really a good man”
And somehow that makes it twice as sad
The woman sitting across the table
Doesn’t tell her what she should do
She only says, “I used to say that”
And suddenly the room goes quiet too
No judgment
No questions
No need to explain the bruise
Sometimes being understood
Is the first thing that keeps you from losing you
Bridge
Maybe heaven doesn’t send us angels
Maybe heaven sends us people
With their own blood on their souls
And their own demons at the door
They’ve walked through hell and now see the wounded
With hell still underneath their shoes
Maybe every scar is a badge
That somebody survived the war
Maybe broken isn’t useless
Maybe broken isn’t worthless
Maybe broken means
You know what breaking looks like.
Breakdown
The nurse who couldn’t save the patient
Now holds another stranger’s hand
The father who buried his daughter
Now answers another father’s call
The teacher who remembers being bullied
Stands between another kid and the wall
The man who once stood on the ledge
Now tells another man,
“Don’t fall.”
Final Chorus
Broken people save broken people
The wounded recognize the wounded somehow
We carry pieces of the people we couldn’t save
And use those pieces to save somebody now
Broken people save broken people
We’re all a little cracked somewhere
And sometimes the person who’s barely holding on
Is the only person who knows somebody else is scared
Outro
So don’t hide every fracture.
Don’t bury every scar.
You never know who needs somebody
Who knows exactly where they are.
The world calls us broken.
Maybe that’s not the whole truth.
Maybe we’re just people
Who learned how to recognize
The broken
In each other.
Broken people…
Save broken people.
